What We Believe

OUR MISSION STATEMENT: We, as members of the First Chinese Presbyterian Church, the people of God, strive to nurture our spirituality, serve God faithfully, spread the Gospel and service the community that God's great love may be manifested.

As Presbyterians, we have a Reformed theology -- based on the writings of John Calvin and other thinkers of the 16th century Protestant Reformation -- and a form of government that is "democratic," meaning the church is run by the church members, not a single person or minister. Since 1910, we have been a member church of the Presbytery of New York City in the Synod of the Northeast of Presbyterian Church (USA). For more information on what Presbyteryians believe, how the organization is structured and run, history of the organization, and more, please see the PCUSA site.

QCPC is organized and run by the Board of Session and the Board of elder. Members of each board are elected by the congregation. Their mission is to serve the church and its members.

The session, which consists of the pastor as the moderator, the associate pastor (if there is one), and nine elders elected by the congregation, governs the church. The main responsibilities of the session include:

    * receiving new members into the church
    * leading the congregation in participating in the mission of the church
    * providing for the worship of the people of God through preaching and other programs
    * providing for the growth of members and helping to equip them for ministry
    * delegating responsibilities to the board of deacons, trustees, and various committees
    * approving and initiating programs which enhance the fulfillment of the mission of the church

The trustees mind the "money matters" of the church, counting and bookkeeping of weekly and special offerings, preparing payroll for staff, setting budgets, paying bills, and also maintaining the church building and grounds. A non-profit corporation chartered in the City of New York, the Board of Trustees assists the session in the governance of the church. There are nine members elected by the congregation. The pastor and the designated liaison from the session serve as ex-officios.

The main responsibility of the elder is to nurture the spiritual life and the welfare of its members. There are nine deacons elected by the congregation. Some of the major activities of the Board of Deacons include preparing the Holy Communion sacraments, conducting weekly home visitation, visiting nursing homes and/or senior citizen centers during Chinese New Year, and organizing workshops and seminars for members in special need.
